University of Kentucky: 3 Things I Knew I’d Find and 3 Things That Surprised Me At UK

With CIT Consultant, Anne Weber

When I added the University of Kentucky to my month-long tour of flagship universities, I knew I’d find:

  1. A school strong in business, health sciences, education, engineering, and equine sciences
  2. A campus filled with Southern charm and traditions
  3. A school spirit that can rock the top of the basketball arena

What I hadn’t expected were three very pleasant surprises:

  1. A modernized campus with 14 new dorms, a beautiful student center and amazing fitness facilities. More than $2B has been spent in the last decade to upgrade the full student experience.
  2. An approachability and flexibility for students who don’t yet know exactly what they want to pursue. UK allows incoming freshmen to select Exploratory Studies.
  3. Two hospitals on campus. The number of students hustling off in Kentucky blue scrubs made more sense when I learned how popular the nursing and pre-health fields are and how hands-on experience is accessible on both sides of the campus.UK has a high admit rate, though 65% of students do hail from Kentucky, making out-of-state a touch more competitive, but still accessible. For a student looking for access to a variety of programs, a warm climate (both weather and social), a very strong school spirit, and one located in a city, UK is definitely one to add to the consideration list.
